Flevo Open 2016
On Saturday, the 17th of September six of us competed at the Flevo Open. The tournament was held in the huge Topsporthal in Almere and with nearly 400 competitors this was one of the biggest tournament in The Netherlands. A great way to kick off the new competition season!
First up was Güven in the -70kg white belt division. He had made a great run trough his division. Unfortunately his opponent in the finals surprised him with a foot lock, which left Güven a silver medal.
Second up was Allard in the -88kg white belt division. During his first match he showed control and patience, submitting his opponent by triangle. After a long wait he got to his second fight, the fight was evenly matched but his opponent managed to pull out a win.
Third up was Alan. This was Alan's first tournament as a blue belt and back in the -70kg division. In his first match he showed great dominance and carried out a win by points. The second match went back and forth, with judo throws and take downs. The referee forgot to give Alan a few points and ended up giving the decision to the opponent.
Forth up was Monti in the -76kg blue belt. His first opponent was a strong and experienced competitor, but Monti showed great fighting spirit. He kept the control during the whole match by winning the scrambles and staying on top. A very strong first win by points. In his second match he had to face our friend Michel (Gracie Barra Hamburg). Again Monti showed great fighting spirit and even tried a flying arm bar, but Michel still managed to submit him. Even tho this was the end for Monti, Michel ended up getting first place.
Fifth up was Bram, also in the -76kg blue belt division. His first and second match went relatively easy, two submission wins by cross collar choke and triangle. His third opponent knew exactly what he wanted to do and managed to submit Bram. Still exhausted from the third match Bram got into his fourth fight, for the bronze medal, but unfortunately he lost by points.
Sixth up was Iris in the 60kg+ white belt division. After a long day Iris her division finally started at 16:45. Her opponent agreed to start with grips and as soon as the fight started she pulled guard. Iris fought hard, trying to enforce her game plan, but her opponent was too strong and ended up submitting Iris.
In between all the fights our friend Marten also competed. Hes been training with us since the Sinistro camp, but still competes under his old team's flag (Ground Fighting Academy). In his first fight he faced a strong opponent. Marten was expecting a heavy grip fight, but instead he got surprised when his opponent did not care about grips at all. This made Marten hesitant in his guard pull, his opponent took advantage of it by passing his guard and submitting him quickly.
All in all it was a great experience for all of us. Everyone fought really great and showed a lot of promise for the upcoming tournaments!
