20/11/2016 - Sporthal Karelrijk, Amstelveen
Today a big part of the Gracie Barra Groningen Jiu Jitsu team together with coach Ezra took the journey to Amsterdam. Everybody was motivated to show the ability to compete and gain experience. The Amsterdam Open began 11 o’clock, so the team arrived half an hour earlier for the first weigh ins. Everybody made weight so the competition could go on.
On Saturday, the 17th of September six of us competed at the Flevo Open. The tournament was held in the huge Topsporthal in Almere and with nearly 400 competitors this was one of the biggest tournament in The Netherlands. A great way to kick off the new competition season!
What an experience! The King of the Beach tournament was something like most of us had never seen before – an outdoor No Gi ONLY tournament right on the edge of a genuine manmade Dutch beach. The King of the Beach tournament came with it’s own unique set of rules whereby a ‘Catch’ (submission attempt) was worth 2 points and all footlocks, including heelhooks, were permitted (in the elite divisions). This changed the dynamic of the fights completely, and saw many many more being won by submission than usual.
On the 24th of June, Ying, Guven and Ezra made the long trip across to London, England. Departing from what appeared at first to be the world’s smallest International Airport, Ezra was well prepared for the strict carry on luggage rules – Guven not so much, but managed to get away with bringing his giant backpack on board by relying on his Kurdish roots. Ying surprised everyone by turning up at the last minute as a spur of the moment decision!
Finally! Another tournament! This time, the 11th of June, even two tournaments! The Female Fighter Cup in Belgium and Rotterdam BJJ Open. At first, we wanted to go to Rotterdam with the whole group. Unfortunately, there had not been enough subscriptions in the brackets of the girls. So they decided to go to Belgium in the end as a last minute decision.
The Rotterdam BJJ Open on 11 June was a lot of fun. A small group of competitors headed that way from Groningen, home of Gracie Barra Groningen.
Last weekend we had four representatives of Gracie Barra Groningen to the IBJJF tournament in Zurich. It was a great weekend, where we had quite some success and also enjoyed the beautiful city. We managed to bring back 10 medals with 4 guys.
It’s been some time ago but Den Haag Open is still worth mentioning! We went to Den Haag the 27th of March with a nice group of people, some of us for their first BJJ competition! After the BJJ competition there also was the possibility to participate in the grappling tournament (GT) which a couple of us did. In total, we won 4 medals!
On the 21st of February, Ying, Güven, Ezra and Chjanoy (our friend from BJJ Purmerend) took the nine-hour car ride from Groningen to Munich to compete in the IBJJF Munich Open. It was the first competition that Güven and Ezra had competed in since the Northern Netherlands Championship in December, and the first competition in several years for Ying and Chjanoy.
The third edition of the NNK BJJ International Open 2015, in our hometown Groningen. We were present with a nice group of fighters from our team. The level was really high with multiple European medalists and other up and coming high level competitors.
